For Exchange and the file/print servers, we back up every other hour during normal business hours. Because Veeam is software aware, I have not had to use an Agent for any VMs (we have on-prem Exchange, SQL, and file/print servers virtualized). We just implemented Veeam B&R, replacing our Unitrends solution. It has a nice feature called "Retention Tier" to prevent ransomware tampering. I'm currently looking into the Exagrid appliances for my backup storage. One reason why VBR have surebackup & surereplica that can not only verify the backup data sets or replica data sets but also scan within the data sets after the respective jobs complete. Else it would be more of a DR and not recovery alone if you want to cover "ransomware" as there are different attacks methods & payloads that may include virus or trojan that have payload that deploys "ransomware". Your worries regarding backup should not be based on ransomware or viruses or malware or trojans as these should have been prevented in the 1st place (eg using diff enterprise grade AVs for different server groups). Then what type backup settings are you using (full, reverse increment or increment) ? How fast is your backup repository ?Īll you need for replication using VBR 11.x is literally storage as very little CPU & RAM is used. Which Veeam software & version are you using ?
Note: "Replication" may not be feasible for my situation because that might acquire additional hardware - cost.
Is that possible? if yes, what type of backup should I be doing - image-level backups? What is best practice and how often can I backup my Hyper-V virtuals during production hours? My fear is that if we were to be hit by ransomware, I would like to restore the VM from an hour or 3 hours ago.
